A death cross is the mirror image of the golden cross: the 50-day simple moving average sits below the 200-day. Both are computed from daily closes, and when the short average drops under the long one, medium-term dynamics are lagging long-term ones — the market is in a downtrend regime. Traders track this state as a backdrop marker: some exclude such coins from bullish-setup screens, others use the list to find the weakest assets in the market.
Like any moving-average crossover, the death cross lags: it records a decline that has already happened rather than predicting one. Confirmation comes from price structure — a sequence of lower highs — and from volume behaviour. The main false signal is a crossover at the tail end of a correction: the averages meet near the bottom of the move, price turns up, and the lines soon cross back. In a sideways market the signal loses most of its meaning.
