Baseline

The average is computed for the same coin, so the threshold works the same on BTC and on an altcoin

Direction

The 24h change shows where price went — volume alone does not

What it means

A volume spike confirms a price move or warns of one. On its own it is neutral: what matters is how the day closed and what price did before.

Common mistakes

A spike on a fresh listing is normal, not a signal
Volume on a thin pair is easy to inflate with one large trade — check the turnover
